Kerala Administrative Service – KAS Exam – Eligibility, Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Study tips

In this post I would like to discuss with you about the most awaited exam by Kerala PSC for graduate level aspirants. It is the Kerala Administrative Service-KAS examination. It is confirmed in January 2018 that, KAS will be conducted by Kerala PSC to appoint eligible persons in to Kerala Administrative services. It is very Powerful and dynamic post as Indian Civil Service (IAS), and can be called as Kerala’s Civil Service .
The Special Rules of Kerala Civil Service Executive has been published under
notification of Government orders. – G.O.(P) No. 12-2017-P&ARD.
The KAS officers will be in four categories
- Junior Time Scale
- Senior Time Sale
- Selection Grade Scale
- Super Time Grade Scale
Freshers will be posted as Junior Time Scale which is a Gazetted II officer Post.
The KAS officers can be conferred as IAS by some rules and conditions. Till now, there was two ways to get promoted as IAS officers.
- After passing Deputy Collector examination and worked as Deputy Colletor
- Worked many years in clerical post in Revenue dept.
The recruitment to KAS posts can be in three ways
- By direct recruitment of Freshers by Kerala Administrative Service (KAS) Exam
- Recruitment from the persons who are already in Kerala Govt. Service
- By promotion or transfer from officials at a superior level
Age limit for applying for KAS( Age relaxation of 3 years for OBC, and 5 years for SC/ST)
- For freshers, the age must be between 21 and 32 years
- For he persons who are already in Kerala Govt. Service, the age must be between 21 and 40 years
- For recruitment by promotion and transfer, the upper age limit is 50 years
The qualification is as all know, the candidates must be a graduate from a recognized university. He/She should be physically fit also.

As per the latest information from Kerala PSC, the syllabus for KAS will be similar to Indian Civil Service (IAS) examination conducted by, UPSC.
We can compare the syllabus of Karnataka Administrative Service Exam syllabus also. In that, I addition to the topics in Indian Civil Service (IAS) examination syllabus, there are topics related to Karnataka; like Karnataka history, Geography,Culture , etc.
So in Kerala Administrative Service Exam (KAS), we can expect topics related to Kerala; like Kerala History, Kerala Renaissance, Kerala Geography, Culture of Kerala etc. Also expect current affairs based on Kerala state importance.
There can be a test for measuring the analytical, aptitude and logical skills of the candidates. So, a paper like CSAT in IAS exam can be expected.
There will be very much importance given to Malayalam language also.
Selection Process
As in UPSC Civil Service Exam, There may be three stages for the recruitment.
- Preliminary ( OMR , OBjective)
- Mains (Descriptive)
- Personal Interview (Personality test)
